A dashiki, Klan robes, and white-face: The White Mandingos’ controversial first impression

January 07, 2015

The White Mandingos: The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me (Fat Beats, 6/11/13)

Murs-fronted and Darryl Jenifer-backed rap-punk group The White Mandingos has debuted the video for “Mandingo Rally,” another single from its upcoming debut album, The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me. If the title of the album isn’t a giveaway, know that this track has a lot to say, lyrically, but also visually.

Murs, as album narrator Tyrone White, holds little back as he rails against the current state of hip-hop affairs. All the while, he spends the entirety of the video changing outfits, going from standard street wear to raising the “Black Power” fist dressed in dashiki and Malcolm X-style glasses to waving a Nazi salute in Ku Klux Klan robes.
