Blingin’ vinyl: Third Man moves gold/platinum records from wall to turntable

January 07, 2015

Baz Luhrmann’s screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby, has whirled up a media storm this spring. The film’s soundtrack also has kicked up a frenzy, with listeners intrigued by the foreign-sounding mixture of modern hip hop / dance and Jazz Age flair as delivered by big-name pop artists like Jay-Z, Gotye, Jack White, The XX, and Lana Del Rey.

Now White’s Third Man Records is taking a cue from the film’s glittering scenery and releasing a fittingly extravagant collectable — a two-disc gold and platinum metallized record set, cased in laser-cut birchwood sleeves that are riveted to aluminum spines.

Check out Third Man’s trailer below, featuring more than a few detailed shots of the set. Be warned, however, as gold and platinum records don’t exactly come cheap. The standard set will run you $25, while the limited edition is exactly ten times that amount.

Both the limited and standard editions will be released on June 11, but you can pre-order both editions here and here, respectively.
