Doom, bloody doom: Cultura Tres’s ritualistic “Es Mi Sangre”

January 08, 2015

Cultura Tres: Rezando al Miedo (Devouter, 5/14/13)

The term “doom” is one that gets thrown around a lot. Between the Mount Dooms, the Doctor Dooms, the Dooms 1 through 4, etc., it’s easy to forget that the word is an old one that means judgement or reckoning — and Venezuela’s Cultura Tres is there with a healthy dose of sludgy, Sepultura-esque riffs that are worthy of the name “doom metal.”

The band’s video for “Es Mi Sangre” (“it’s my blood”) is a murky affair, filled with disturbing, ritualistic imagery and constantly flickering in and out of focus. Come for the heavy riffage, but stay for the close-up shot of a stainless needle threading through fleshy hide, the texture of which is enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end.
